The combination of cultures created parallel themes: repression, exploration, freedom and rebellion. Nary Manivong and Alexandria Hilfiger are the design duo; NAHM represents the first and last initials of
the designers’ names and also translates to ‘water’ in Laotian, Nary’s ancestral language. According to the duo, inspiration for the collection was garnered from the film Belle du Jour and the Parisian expats who ventured to Laos in the 1970s.
Models were presented in an environment littered with wicker and rusted bird -cages, AstroTurf and soiled Oriental area rugs. Colors of burnt crimson and angelic ivory complimented bamboo and tweed prints. Influence derived from Laotian and Parisian culture created a uniquely peaceful, dignified effect. The collection was largely comprised of dresses with exaggerated bows, pockets, and poplin collars. Skirt lengths half way between mini and maxi, the dresses billowed upon bare knees, with nary
a knicker in sight.
